“Always keep the ‘care’ in health care”

列克星敦肯塔基州. (11月. 22, 2023) — 教授essor Emeritus William Grimes, D.最小值, APRN, PA, has been named the recipient of the 2023 Dan Martin Award 为 Lifetime Contribution to Rural Health in 肯塔基州 by the 肯塔基州 Rural Health Association.

作为一名教授 医师助理研究, Grimes was known 为 his legacy of compassionate care as both an educator and clinician.

“My experience and work is in health science, but my attitude is that health care is a ministry,格兰姆斯说. “It’s caring 为 people in a different kind of way.”

This calling led Grimes to co-found the New Hope Free Clinic in Owingsville, Ky. 格兰姆斯说, a burden 为 many patients stems from the attitude that business and payment in the medical profession is paramount, rather than care 为 the patient being the most essential factor.

Born and raised in Chicago, Grimes moved to 肯塔基州 in 1976. He holds multiple degrees, including two associates, one in nursing and one in science; a B.S. in Science; B.H.S. in Health Science from the 健康科学学院; a master’s in pastoral studies; and a Doctor of 最小值istry in health care ministry.

Grimes attributes his experience as a clinician, 还有新希望, as his most helpful asset as an educator.

“One of the things I always stress to my students is that we must be people who truly care,他说. “关心是什么意思?? For me, it means I treat patients with dignity and want what is best 为 them. I do everything I can to help them come to a better health and better life. It’s important 为 my students and all health care providers to remember that we must always keep the ‘care’ in health care.”

He said being named recipient of the award was a humbling honor.

“I know so many others who are deserving of such an award, and many are working in rural 肯塔基州,他说. “I accept it 为 all of them and myself and thank the Association 为 their work in this area.”   

After 27 years working 为 the primary care system, Grimes left to teach full-time at the Physician Assistant Program at Morehead State University. 

“Today I look around the area and I find that there are many PAs who graduated locally are now working in this area,他说. “That is real progress and that is why we thank the 肯塔基州 Rural Health Association, St. 克莱尔医疗中心, Morehead State University and the 健康科学学院 at the 火狐体育下注. Remember: Always keep the ‘care’ in health care.”

In April 2018, he was inducted into the 健康科学学院 校友 Hall of Fame.

自2003年以来, the 肯塔基州 Rural Health Association has presented an individual with an award 为 lifetime contributions to rural health in 肯塔基州. The award is named 为 its first recipient, Dr. Dan Martin of the Trover Foundation in Madisonville.

The Dan Martin Award is given to someone who has provided many years of service to rural health, 无论是在病人护理方面, 政府, 卫生职业教育, 卫生行政, health promotion or public advocacy.
